Atkore - Hobart, IN

Atkore International, a leading provider of electrical, safety and infrastructure solutions, chose Becknell Industrial to construct its new facility in Hobart, Indiana. Becknell was selected as the developer of choice given its previous experience with similar manufacturing clients and its ability to provide a well-located Class A facility. This facility allows Atkore to consolidate a portion of its Midwest operations, while also allowing for future expansion capability. Atkore was familiar with Becknell’s decades long success after acquiring Calpipe, an existing tenant in Becknell’s Northwind Crossings business park, and where Becknell has successfully developed nearly 2MSF.

With convenient access to I-65, Northwind Crossings allowed Atkore to be in close proximity to its other locations and current employees, along with providing an additional strong labor pool in Northwest Indiana. Becknell offered an efficient site, which allowed Atkore to purchase less acreage and accomodate their evolving space requirements. Shortly after signing the Phase 1 lease to consolidate three Midwestern facilities into a 300,000 SF facility, Becknell and Atkore began discussions for Phase 2 which required an additional 300,000 SF. Despite winter conditions, Becknell’s vertically integrated approach made this change as seamless as possible and the project was completed in 12 months.

While Phase 1 is used for storage and distribution, Phase 2 is a manufacturing space that required heavy power use needing 20,000 Amp electrical service. High voltage power was brought to the site and stepped down at a private transformer, allowing Atkore to purchase power at more competitive rates. Within the new space, Atkore required a conduit manufacturing mill, a 30 ton bridge crane that runs the length of the manufacturing area and several specialized drive-in doors to distribute the large, heavy bundles of steel. There are 17 pieces of equipment within the mill line that required specialized equipment foundation pits.
